Fire has ravaged two shops at Kpankpo, a suburb of Dodowa – Wedokum. The fire which started around 12 am Thursday, destroyed items in a bar and provisions shop, as well as a bicycle spare parts, shop both belonging to Mr. Francis Wayo.
The owner of the two shops, Mr. Francis told Baina News that he lost everything in his bar. He had closed for the day and was on his way to Adeiso in the Eastern region when he was informed about the fire via a phone call.
Items that got burnt include a refrigerator, a television set, provisions, chairs, tables, a radio set, two gas cylinders, bicycles, and many more. He said that he has lost almost ¢55,000 in the inferno, and he does not know how to recover because he had not insured his shops.
Officials of the Ghana Fire of Service, led by APO Agyei told Baina News that they were informed about the fire at 12:10 am, after which they swiftly moved to the scene to fight the fire. He added that they made sure that the fire could not spread to adjoining properties.
He said that their preliminary investigations indicate that the fire could have been started by an electrical fault and that the presence of the alcoholic drinks worsened the situation, as they added more fuel to the fire.
He advised the general public to call the fire service first whenever the need arises and they should desist from trying to fight fire by themselves as it may be too late for their officers to be able to fight the fire.
He further admonished people who may need to burn weeds or rubbish to create fire belts to prevent the fire from getting out of hand. He also added that the presence of fire extinguishers could have prevented the catastrophe from happening.
