The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has revealed that at least 220 Ghanaians residing in Ukraine are anticipated to come home as a result of the government’s evacuation operations during the country’s upheaval.
24 of the stranded citizens, she claims, are already at the Romanian airport, waiting to join a Qatar Airways flight to Accra.
The Minister said in a press conference on Sunday that the government is dedicated to aiding all individuals who want to return home.
“I am pleased to inform you that, a good number, over 220 of our compatriots have exited Ukraine and should be with us in Ghana soon, and we are earnestly facilitating the safe return of a lot more,” the Minister said.
“24 have arrived in Bucharest, Romania, and our officer on the ground is procuring tickets for them to leave tomorrow [Monday] en route Accra.”
She stated that Ghanaians being evacuated from Ukraine are traveling by bus to Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic and that Ghana’s diplomatic officers, honorary consuls, and student leaders are assisting them with their entry, stay, and return to Ghana.
“As at midday, today [Sunday] information gathered is that over 460 students have left Ukraine en route to Poland, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. The students will be received by our diplomatic missions, honorary consuls, and officials of the students union and associations.”
The government, according to the Minister, is only aiding those who want to return home.
Meanwhile, the Minister says the meeting with relatives of Ghanaians stuck in Ukraine is to ease their anxieties and reassure them that the government is committed to ensuring their safety despite the chaos. The summit will take place at the Accra International Conference Center on Tuesday, 1 March 2022.
